New Master’s Scholarships Awarded by de Tornyay Center
and John A. Hartford Foundation

Cheryl Bauermeister, Lisa Rehberger and Kori Dewing have received this year’s de Tornyay Center Master’s Nursing Research Scholarships to assist in the development of their career interests in the health of older adults. Bauermeister, who will be studying "The Transition Experience of Older Adults Relocating into Assisted Living," and Rehberger, who will explore "Choosing Artificial Nutrition and Hydration: an Examination of the Decision-Making Process of Surrogate Decision-Makers for Patients with Advanced Dementia," will both be mentored by Margaret Dimond, Aljoya Endowed Professor in Aging, who is widely renowned for her research on caring for older adults and making successful transitions.

Dewing will be working under Associate Professor of Nursing Basia Belza on her thesis, "Motivation for Participation in Physical Activity in Older Adults Residing in Retirement Communities." Belza is recognized for her research on the benefits of physical activity and exercise for those with chronic illnesses, with a focus on the unique needs and issues of older adults.

Award funding was made possible by private gifts to the de Tornyay Center for Healthy Aging and from grant funds provided by the John A. Hartford Foundation.

Each year, the de Tornyay Center and the John A. Hartford Foundation provide both undergraduate and graduate level scholarships to encourage more research about healthy aging and improved health outcomes for older adults.
