News Briefs from the School of Nursing

Chair of Psychosocial and Community Health Bobbie Berkowitz and her team were awarded a developmental center grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) to establish a Nursing Partnership Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research, in conjunction with University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Nursing.

Ruth Craven, professor and associate dean, Educational Outreach & Community Relations, received a 2002 UW Faculty Award for Distinguished Contribution to Lifelong Learning.

Julie Katz has been named Assistant Dean for Academic Services. She has served as director of Academic Services since December 2001.

Promoting Maternal Mental Health During Pregnancy by JoAnne Solchany has been selected by Sigma Theta Tau International as a 2002 recipient of the Nursing Print Award.

At Convocation 2002, Patricia Betrus was the recipient of the Sandra Eyres Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Gaylene Altman was presented with the Rheba de Tornyay Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Pat Abbott, clinical faculty, received a University of Washington Educational Outreach Teaching Excellence Award for her work in the Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner Program.

Associate Professor Pamela Jordan is the 2002 recipient of the Sandra J. Eyres Faculty Appreciation Award presented by the Staff Advisory Council.

Continuing Nursing Education received the maximum national accreditation of six years from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Three faculty received career development awards from NINR, National Institutes of Health. Eunjung Kim and Mayumi Willgerodt received three-year mentored career development awards; Cynthia Dougherty, received a K01 career award.

Anna Scott, Mo-Kyung Sin and Mayumi Willgerdodt were among the first to receive awards from a new endowment established by Psi chapter at large of Sigma Theta Tau.

Marcia Killien and her Family and Child Nursing team received a Research Royalty Fund award for their study of recurrent headaches in adolescents.

A study by doctoral student Jamie Goldstein-Shirley on end-of-life decision-making was approved and funded by NINR.

A new educational program in collaboration with Bastyr University will enhance integration of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies into UW nursing curricula. Key faculty are Margaret Heitkemper (PI), Kristen Swanson, Eleanor Bond and Jane Cornman. Joseph Chu, MD, is leading the Bastyr collaboration.
