Alumni News

Betty Jane (BJ) Ely ’52 MN recently moved from her home in Kentucky to be near family in Spokane, Washington. Dorothy Hunt ’59 retired after 30 years in psychiatric nursing at various Veteran’s Administration hospitals. She now lives near family in La Grande, Oregon.

Sandy Piscitello ’64 retired after 30 years of service to University of Washington Medical Center. She worked 24 of those years as nurse manager in orthopaedics.

Veneta Masson ’70 MA was contributing editor for an American Journal of Nursing special feature on the meaning of 9/11 for nurses. Masson was Alumna of the Year in 1998.

Sally Sample ’72 MN was recognized by the American Nurses Association for serving as a commissioner on the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Board. Sample is the first nurse appointed to this position.

Kimberly Moody ’94 PhD, assistant professor of nursing, University of Southern Maine, received an award from the Maine Development Foundation for her work establishing programs for at-risk adolescents and preteens.

Yu-Tzu Dai ’95 PhD is the new director of the School of Nursing, National Taiwan University. Dai is the second UW nursing graduate to hold this position at NTU, which has an exchange agreement with the UW for faculty and students.

Sarah Gimbel-Sherr ’01 presented a paper at the World AIDS Conference in Barcelona in July. Gimbel-Sherr is the HIV/AIDS coordinator for Health Alliance International.

Janelle Sagmiller ’03 was selected for the McNair Achievement Award funded by the University of Washington, the United States Dept. of Education, UW Graduate School, and the UW Office of Minority Affairs. As a McNair Scholar, Sagmiller will receive financial and other assistance to attain her goal of teaching and doing research at the college level.
