Retired Professor Emeritus Vivian Wolf-Wilets has donated three rare copies of books about major curriculum projects to the School of Nursing. Clinical faculty member Ginny Lewis was one of 48 nurses from 11 western states nominated for a Nursing Excellence Award by NurseWeek magazine. She was a finalist in the clinical care category. Associate Dean Susan L. Woods is representing the School on an international coalition of nursing leaders dealing with the nursing response to mass casualty disasters such as school or workplace violence, bombs or radiation release, or nuclear, chemical or biological warfare.

Carolyn Chow and Judith Kelson are authors of an article entitled, "Is it time for you to go back to school?" appearing in the January 2002 career issue of the American Journal of Nursing.

Associate Dean for Research Pamela Mitchell was awarded two grants to support interdisciplinary education among UW health sciences schools. A grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration was the only award made in a national competition. A second grant was received from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.

Associate Professor Terri Simpson was elected to the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Nominating Committee.

New Home Care Curriculum Addresses Rural Shortages
A new federal grant addressing the critical shortage of home care providers is assisting the School of Nursing in offering the Adult Nurse Practitioner and Home Care curriculum with distance learning support to registered nurses on the south Olympic Peninsula, and to students in the greater Puget Sound region. Applications for Winter 2002 are now being accepted. For information, contact Judith Kelson, 206/543-7851, [toll free 866-866-0195], or email jkelson@u.washington.edu.

New Wound Management Certificate Program Launched. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded a three-year grant to Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) to prepare registered nurses for expanded practice in wound care. The first certificate course will be offered in April-May 2002 and was developed collaboratively by faculty in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems and wound care specialists in the community. For more information about this program, contact CNE at (206) 543-1047.

In October, Dean Emeritus Sue T. Hegyvary, second from right, was guest of honor at a formal unveiling of her portrait, which will be added to the School's famous "wall of deans" leading to the dean's office. Among the many guests joining her for an afternoon of celebration and camaraderie were UW President Richard McCormick and Dean Nancy Woods, on the left, as well as Hegyvary's predecessor, Dean Emeritus Rheba de Tornyay, far right. Serving as dean from 1986-98, Hegyvary oversaw the establishment of three endowed professorships as well as an annual endowed public lecture. The first Center for Women's Health Research in the United States was also founded during her deanship, as was the de Tornyay Center on Healthy Aging. Perhaps her proudest achievement as a nurse and sociologist was the endowment of the Hegyvary Citizens of the World fund to support nursing students exploring health care in different cultures.
