Dr. Sue K. Donaldson to Examine Nursing
Science at Annual Soule Lecture

Dr. Sue K. Donaldson, dean of the school of nursing at Johns Hopkins University, will be the featured speaker at the 21st annual Elizabeth Sterling Soule lecture on Thursday, June 15.

Donaldson received a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Washington in 1973 and was tenured as an associate professor in both the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing at the UW until 1978. During that time she served on the planning committee that identified and defined the research parameters of the Nursing Ph.D. program. Donaldson will speak on "Nursing Science, Past and Future."

Donaldson was continuously funded for her research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1974 to 1997 and was principal investigator for two federal research grants addressing faculty research and the doctoral program in nursing. She is a fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences. In addition to serving as dean and professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Donaldson is also a professor of physiology at the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins.

The Soule lecture and reception coincides with the first reunion of graduates of the Ph.D. in Nursing Science program at the University of Washington. The reunion event will be held June 15-17 on the Seattle campus and will include "Think Tank" discussion groups of some of the topics covered in Donaldson’s presentation, as well as others generated by participants.

The Elizabeth Sterling Soule lecture was initiated in 1979 to honor the founding dean of the School of Nursing and is funded through the Elizabeth Sterling Soule Fund. Alumni, faculty and friends who recognize the importance of nursing leadership can become Soule Associates through donations to the fund, which has as its goal the establishment of an endowed chair in Dean Soule’s name.

Those interested in attending the Soule lecture and reception may still obtain reservations by calling the nursing development office at 543-3019. The lecture will begin at 4 pm in Kane Hall.
