Berkowitz Named Alumni Endowed Professor in Nursing

Bobbie Berkowitz
Bobbie Berkowitz
In March, Bobbie Berkowitz, professor of psychosocial and community health (PCH), gained an additional title: the Alumni Endowed Professor in Nursing.

The professorship, established in 2004, exists because of generous support from many UW School of Nursing alumni, numerous faculty members and friends. Together they contributed $250,000 to create this professorship at a time when nursing faculty are critically needed. The professorship helps the school retain and reward talented faculty who make significant contributions to the School of Nursing's education and research programs.

Berkowitz is a leader in shaping public health and community health nursing in the United States. She studies ways to transform and strengthen the country's public health systems as director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Turning Point National Program Office. Berkowitz also directs the school's Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research, which works to identify and help eliminate cultural, linguistic and economic roadblocks to care. Berkowitz joined the UW School of Nursing faculty in 1996 and is a former department chair in PCH.

A professorship endowment is a permanent fund that grows in perpetuity and is used to enhance salary or support research and other professional activities of a distinguished faculty member and his or her students.
