Voices from the New "Wonder Years": Life After "Retirement"
Linn Larson, MN
Assistant Professor Emeritus of Psychosocial and Community Health
Clinician and teacher in psychosocial mental health for over 25 years.
"I taught for a couple of years after retiring in 1986. For me, easing out gradually was much easier than walking away. You begin to fill your life with other things. I have become involved in volunteering as a way to expand my horizons, most recently at the Suzzallo library. I have also enjoyed reading what I want, when I want. And I walk every day. I have a small dog that drags me around the block. Probably the most interesting thing I have done since retiring is taking several trips to Antartica. I have been three times now, as well as on a trip around the Aleutian Islands. I have gone with a group, flying part way and then taking a ship. You have to go in the winter, which is Antartica's summer. It can still get down to freezing some days and the air is very dry. There are naturalists and geologists on board who lecture about the wildlife and other things. I've also traveled on ice-breakers and by helicopter to see the penguin colonies. It is such an "otherworld" experience, very beautiful and very fascinating."
