Voices from the New "Wonder Years": Life After "Retirement"

Pauline Bruno, PhD, RN
Associate Professor of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems

Led medical-surgical nursing courses and clinicals over a 20-year teaching career.

"I left the UW in 1984 and went to Spokane where I worked in an administrative position until 1992. But I live closer to Seattle now and attend many events at the School. I have always liked hiking and skiing and still do quite a bit of both at 80. I have been to Scotland with the Mountaineers Club and also hiked in the Pyrenees, the Dolomites, Poland and Norway. I've also hiked Switzerland and Austria a couple of times. I am going to Ireland and Bulgaria next, with Walking Softly Adventures. I also ski several times a year, usually at Stevens Pass. I have belonged to the Mountaineers since 1962. I was introduced to their "Alpine Scramble" course by Stella Hay, and taught it for a couple of years. I've climbed Mt. Rainier and also Baker, Olympus and Mt. St. Helens before it blew. I no longer "scramble," as it involves rugged, off-trail hiking, but I am still involved in "Midweek Hikers." I guess I've stayed healthy because I've never smoked or drank alcohol. But I also think it's the luck of the draw sometimes. I just know I've always been interested in the outdoors, long before I retired."
