Voices from the New "Wonder Years": Life After "Retirement"

Marjorie V. Batey, PhD, RN, FAAN
Professor Emeritus of Community Health Care Systems.

Founding director of the Office of Nursing Research, 1970; a "Marjorie Batey Day" is held in her honor.

"I don't like the concept of 'retirement' as it has the connotation of going to bed and pulling the covers up. When the School held a "retirement party" for me, I said it should be called a 'commencement party,' as I was starting a new phase of life - free to do what I wanted and when I wanted. Since leaving the School in 1993, I have made some new friends, traveled to some new places, and cultivated some new hobbies. Since 1994 I've volunteered regularly at a nearby elementary school, working with first graders on reading and math. And to stay in shape to do all these things, I work out regularly at a gym. Also, when the weather's nice, a friend and I enjoy getting out. There are lots of walking places near Seattle. Any one of them can make a good destination. Take along a picnic lunch and enjoy the countryside. In a sense it's part of 'travel' - one doesn't necessarily have to go very far to find a new place to enjoy."
