A Gift to the Future of Nursing

Ansell and Dorothy Johnson Endow New Scholarship Fund
A charitable gift annuity such as that established by Ansell and Dorothy Johnson allows them to transfer cash or appreciated securities to the University and receive income back. The gift also provides them with a charitable income tax deduction. When the Johnsons' gift annuity terminates, the remaining principle will be used to endow the Ansell and Dorothy Johnson Scholarship Fund in nursing. However, gifts such as the Johnsons can also be directed to scholarships, research, faculty support or any other purpose that a donor and the School of Nursing determine can make the most difference.

Ansell Johnson knows what it's like to put yourself through school. He also knows what it's like to almost lose yourlife because there aren't enough nurses around. While already hospitalized for a heart attack, Johnson suffered a second one and only the quick action of his wife, Dorothy, saved him. The hospital was understaffed and the nurse caring for Johnson was dealing with another patient. When she got to Johnson's room, she saved his life.

"I know that there's a shortage of nurses," Johnson commented in a recent visit with Dean Nancy Woods. "and I hope I can help someone who couldn't afford to go to school  become a nurse."

To do this, Ansell and Dorothy Johnson have made a $100,000 gift to the School of Nursing which will eventually endow the Ansell and Dorothy Johnson Scholarship Fund in nursing.

"I realize how important it is to have a competent, caring and compassionate nurse at your side when you are most vulnerable," Johnson observed. He also noted that he has a niece who is a nurse practitioner, and a sister and another niece who are registered nurses. "So you see, it's kind of in the family," he says.
