Just for Men: Web Page Promotes Careers in Nursing

It 's a fact that few nurses are men. But a Web site created by alumnus Mark D'Andrea '04 aims to encourage more men to think about a career in nursing. D'Andrea was formerly an engineer, but decided to make a change. Today he works as a nurse on the telemetry unit at Virginia Mason, monitoring patients with acute care needs. For his senior honors project, D'Andrea developed a 'Men in Nursing' Web page to let other guys know what the profession has to offer.

"The idea was to provide a link between men considering nursing and men who already understand what a career in nursing is all about," D'Andrea says. "Many stereotypes from early days of nursing carry on today and these, unfortunately, often affect both male and female recruitment."

The site features career information, links to nursing schools, a history of men in nursing, and profiles of men around the country who hold different nursing jobs. D'Andrea asked male students at UW School of Nursing what they'd like to see on the Web site and based its content on survey responses. The project is part of a larger effort by the school to promote diversity within the nursing profession. To visit the site, go to www.son.washington.edu/students/min.
