Lee Wins UCSF'S Top Award for Research
Kathryn Lee '86, the James and
Marjorie Livingston Endowed Chair in
Nursing at the University of California-
San Francisco (UCSF), received UCSF's
prestigious 2004 Helen Nahm Research
Lecture Award. The award recognizes a
UCSF School of Nursing faculty member
or graduate who has made an outstanding
contribution to nursing science and
research. As recipient, Lee delivered
the Helen Nahm Research Lecture at
UCSF in June.
Lee, an international expert on sleep
and women's health, studies circadian
rhythms, sleep and fatigue as they relate
to key phases during women's lives, such as
childbearing and menopause. Lee was one
of the first researchers to study changes
in sleep on a longitudinal basis. Her first
studies described alterations in circadian
temperature rhythms and sleep stages over
the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy
and postpartum. Her mentors include
Betty Giblin, professor emeritus, Joan
Shaver '76, and Nancy Wo ods, dean.
Lee earned her master's and PhD degrees
from the UW School of Nursing.
After a two-year postdoctoral
fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson
Clinical Nurse Scholar, Lee joined the
UCSF faculty in 1988, has twice received
Mentor of the Year Awards from doctoral
students, and serves on several national
boards and committees.
This award, inaugurated in 1981,
honors the late Helen Nahm, dean of the
UCSF School of Nursing from 1958-1969.
Former awardees from the University of
Washington include Professor Emeritus
Jeanne Quint Benoliel in 1983 and
Marylin Dodd '73 in 1993.
