CNE Partnership to Offer Expanded
Medical-Surgical Nursing Education

The School of Nursing's Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) program received a three-year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for its project, Expanded Practice in Medical-Surgical Nursing.

The project, a partnership between the University of Washington School of Nursing, UW Medical Center (UWMC), Virginia Mason Medical Center and other regional urban and rural medical centers, will prepare nurses for certification in medical-surgical nursing and offer career mentoring and counseling to increase the number, diversity and retention of certified medical-surgical nurses. The partnership, led by Ruth Craven, associate dean for educational outreach and community relations at UW School of Nursing, and Lorie Wild, director of patient care services at UWMC, builds on a long history of excellence in medical-surgical nursing at UWMC and allows for a range of teaching and mentoring experiences.

As a result of HRSA funding, effective July 2004 through June 2007, the project will reach more than 900 nurses with a combination of educational offerings, including a 14-week certification review course, an annual two-day conference, quarterly nursing grand rounds and access to online short courses.

CNE will hold a two-day conference at the Shoreline Conference Center Oct. 21-22, 2004. More than 150 nurses from 40-plus health care agencies are expected to attend. Planning is also under way for holding the first certification review course in January- April 2005. Agencies around the Northwest are eligible to participate via videoconferencing. Coordinators from participating agencies will meet for a one-day workshop on Oct. 23. UWMC and Virginia Mason staff who were involved in a pilot review course last winter will mentor the coordinators.

For more information about upcoming project offerings, please contact UW CNE at 206-543-1047.
