CNE Expands Offerings, Links to Community

This fall, Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) at the University of Washington is expanding its programs with two new conferences.

Nurses who want to learn new skills or prepare for national certification in medical-surgical practice can attend "Update in Medical-Surgical Nursing" Oct. 23-24 in Seattle. "Recognizing and Responding to Domestic Violence in Your Clinical Setting" is offered Nov. 7 in conjunction with the Nursing Program at UW Tacoma.

Other fall offerings include some 25 half- and full-day skills workshops on Saturday, Oct. 11, a conference on advancements in wound and ostomy care, and the 29th annual update on gerontological nursing, just to name a few.

CNE offers more than 30 conferences each year, linking nurses throughout the region with the UW to learn about new research and innovations in nursing practice. A team of representatives from numerous community agencies, regional and national organizations, and School of Nursing faculty plan each conference. Pharmaceutical and other commercial companies also typically provide educational grants and exhibit at the events.

"Our community partners enable us to bring in speakers and conduct conferences we might otherwise be unable to offer," says Martha DuHamel, assistant dean for CNE. "In addition to financial support, our many partners contribute to planning, sponsoring speakers, providing release time for staff to attend and funding scholarships for students."

DuHamel adds: "Along with providing lifelong learning opportunities, community involvement and support make up the foundation of our program. We couldn't do it without them."
