< Windows Help: Connecting Networked Printers

Networked printers must be installed for each user that logs in to a computer. So, for each person that wishes to print to a networked printer from a particular workstation, the following steps must be performed.

First, determine the name of the computer that the printer is connected to.

If the printer is connected directly to a computer:

·Windows 2000/XP: Right click the My Computer Icon, Select Properties, and go to the Computer Name tab. The name of the computer is: <computer name>.son.washington.edu

·Windows 98/Me: Right click the Network Neighborhood/My Network Places Icon, Select Properties, and go to the Identification tab. The name of the computer is displayed in the Computer Name text field box.

If the printer is connected via an Ethernet cable:

· Find a computer that you know is able to print to the printer in question. In the Start Menu of the connected computer, select Settings, and then Printers. The printer in question should be displayed on the Printer page. Read the description. The computer name is displayed like this: <printer name> on <computer name>; for example HPLJ1100 on corptime, where corptime is the computer name.

Next, (for all Windows operating systems) on the computer that you want to be able to print from:

· Go to the Start Menu, and select Run.
· Type ‘\\<computer name>’ for example: \\corptime
· Press Enter.
· In the window that opens up, locate the printer and Right click on it.
· Select Connect or Install (depending on the OS)
· Close the window.

Finally:

Go to the Start Menu, and select Settings, and then Printers
Make sure that the new printer is now displayed.
Right click on the printer icon and select Properties.
On the General tab, click the ‘Print Test Page’ button.

If a test page prints: CONGRATULATIONS! You have installed a networked printer!
