Grant #3

PREVENTING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS AND PROMOTING SCHOOL READINESS IN HEAD START
2000-2006

From 2000-2006 we were funded by the National Center for Nursing Research and a Head Start Partnership Grant to evaluate our parent, teacher, and child training prevention programs in Head Start centers. In this grant Head Start classrooms were randomly assigned to receive either the intervention programs or the usual Head Start services.

The intervention consisted of training for all teachers and implementation of the classroom version of the Dinosaur Social Skills and Problem Solving Curriculum in the classroom for all children. Parents of some children were offered the parent program in the schools. Head Start teachers and family service workers were trained to deliver these programs in partnership with Parenting Clinic staff. Credits were offered for participating in the training workshops. The intervention lasted throughout the Head Start school year.

We worked with the following Headstart programs in the Seatle area:

African American Academy

Grant #4

PREVENTING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS AND PROMOTING SCHOOL AND ACADEMIC COMPETENCE IN EARLY SCHOOL YEARS
2000-2006

From 2000-2006 we were also funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse to evaluate our parent, teacher, and child training prevention programs in kindergarten and grade one. In this grant, classrooms were randomly assigned to the two types of interventions and to control condition (i.e., usual services).

One intervention involved the teacher and classroom Dinosaur Curriculum for all children. The other intervention involved the addition of parent training for some children in the class. Teachers and school counselors were rained to deliver the interventions in partnership with our Parenting Clinic staff. Credits were offered for participating in the workshops.

We are evaluating the results of these interventions for promoting social competence and emotional literacy and preventing behavior problems. This intervention was offered to parents, children, and teachers in both kindergarten and grade one. Children were followed up in grades two and three.

Some of the schools participating included:

Alki
Beacon Hill

Cedar Way
Cooper
Gatzert
Highlands
Kimball
Mountlake Terrace
Northgate
Olympic Hills
Orca
Roxhill
Sherwood Forest
