Using the Science of Informatics to Advance Health Disparities Research
"Nursing
Informatics and Health Disparities: What's the Link? Nurses may
be the best-positioned of all health care providers to understand
the diversity of patient experiences and to create systematic strategies
to address them. Nursing informatics research has as its goal establishing
knowledge representation, knowledge management, and knowledge discovery
mechanisms for the formalization, manipulation, and storage of nursing
phenomena. Exploring the links between nursing informatics and the
study of health disparities will yield better ways for characterizing
patients, documenting their health status and health care needs,
and assuring that emerging technologies are properly designed to
insure meeting the needs of the many groups for which nurses provide
care."
