Practice Characteristics

The Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner specialty option prepares its graduates to provide women's health care in ambulatory care settings. As a WHCNP, you are an independent practitioner, often working with a team to meet the health needs of women across the life span. Our graduates are eligible to take the National Certification Corporation WHCNP certification exam, a necessary step to your start in this rewarding profession.

Within the WHCNP specialty option, clinical decision making is emphasized to prepare students to:

  • provide specialty obstetrical and gynecological care within NP scope of practice
  • diagnose and treat common acute adult health problems
  • order and interpret screening and diagnostic tests
  • counsel patients on healthy lifestyles (health promotion)
  • conduct risk assessment and reduction
  • collaborate with the patient to promote patient self care
  • prescribe medications
  • consult with other health care providers when appropriate

Examples of where WHCNP graduates are employed:

  • Health department clinics
  • HMOs
  • OB/GYN private practices
  • Family planning agencies
