Prospective Students

Today's Certified Nurse-Midwife is an advanced practice nurse who is qualified to provide health care for women and their newborns during the childbearing cycle as well as provide reproductive and primary care to women throughout their lifespan. Nurse-midwifery is an exciting, dynamic profession that offers many options for work in both national and international health care, including clinical practice, research, policy and education. This specialty is available to students completing the Master of Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice degree programs.

The UW School of Nursing is consistently ranked the number one nursing school in the U.S. and the nurse-midwifery program among the top ten programs. Our faculty includes leaders in research and practicing clinicians. The curriculum is designed to provide nurse-midwifery students with a solid foundation in clinical science, evidence-based practice, methods of systematic inquiry and professional leadership skills. Students gain exposure to rich and diverse clinical learning opportunities through placement with collaborative community preceptors.

We believe that professional experience is important to success in graduate school and will evaluate applicants based on both work and volunteer experiences that demonstrate a commitment to women's and maternal-child health issues. Applicants with a background in nursing specialty areas such as labor and delivery, mother-baby, antepartum, gynecology, or ambulatory women's health are excellent candidates for nurse-midwifery education. For non-nurses, education and /or work experience in fields such as childbirth education, doula, lactation consultant, health education, counseling, public health and international health all provide a strong background for graduate nurse-midwifery education.

Distance learning opportunities are available.

Program Accreditation
