The curriculum includes core courses in health care systems, informatics, and
patient-centered technologies. CIPCT students will take the core informatics courses
with graduate students from multiple disciplines and complete an individual thesis.
The program also offers practical exposure to research groups and health care organizations
tailored to the individual student's interests.
Students are required to complete a number of project and thesis credits. Examples of these
projects include:
- NMETH 598 – Independent study in an informatics topic (e.g., a systematic
literature review for a specific informatics research question, an analysis of the
market for specific software products, etc.)
- NMETH 600 – An applied project such as participation in the implementation
or evaluation activities for a health information system (e.g., conducting usability
focus groups, surveying end users to assess specific system features)
- NMETH 700 – Thesis credits. An MS thesis is a small research project focusing
on a specific research question. (e.g. assessing the usability of an electronic medical
record system in an academic medical center).
While CIPCT does not require completion of electives, there are many interesting courses
offered through the School of Nursing and the UW which CIPCT students have access to. However,
many of these elective courses are not offered with distance learning support and will
require on campus attendance.
Electives are not required and are not available by distance learning. On campus
attendance will be required for most elective options).
