Nurse-Midwifery
Graduate Certificate Program

The program of study will be individualized according to each student's past educational preparation and work experience but all students will complete at least 5-6 consecutive quarters of midwifery advanced practice curriculum. GCPAPN students may be able to use a full-time or part-time curriculum plan. Upon successful completion of the coursework, graduates will be qualified to take the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) national certification examination and apply for licensure to practice as a CNM in Washington or any other state.

All of the required nurse-midwifery courses are offered with distance learning support available, making the program accessible to students who live outside of the Seattle area as well as to students with limited availability during the week. Technologies used to support distance learning include video and audio-streaming, videoconferencing, e-mail, discussion boards, the World Wide Web, and video/audio tapes, as determined by the student's home site capabilities. Some of the required courses will also require on-campus attendance two to three times per quarter.

The clinical practica and associated clinical seminars in the nurse-midwifery program involve both outpatient and inpatient care experiences and includes content in the primary care of women's common health problems and reproductive health as well as care during the perinatal period, including management of labor and birth and initial care of the newborn. Students are placed with community preceptors for the clinical practica and have options for both urban and rural practice experiences.

The curriculum will be individualized for GCPAPN students, but will require completion of the core graduate nurse-midwifery curriculum. Prior to final acceptance in to the program, applicants will meet with midwifery program faculty in order to develop an individualized, mutually agreed upon curriculum plan. This curriculum is in keeping with the requirements for nurse-midwifery preparation as defined in the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice.
