The Advanced Practice Community Health System Nursing specialty, within the Master of Nursing
and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, strives to prepare nurses for
leadership positions in diverse community and public health settings.
Students are required to take classes offered by School of Nursing and other disciplines on the
UW campus. Although some classes have on-line sessions or may be offered in the evenings, many
classes are on campus and scheduled during the regular hours in the week.
Graduates from this specialty will be able to work:
- as leaders in community health promotion,
- in a policy environment,
- in program development and evaluation,
- in a consultant capacity,
- in education,
- as direct management or administrative role in public or private sectors at the local, state,
national or international levels.
Leaders in Advanced Practice Community Health Systems Nursing contribute to health promotion,
disease prevention and health protection in a variety of areas, such as maternal-child health,
senior citizen centers, school health, and hearing conservation in occupational settings.
The APCHSN curriculum prepares students as a GENERALIST in community health nursing. Students may
also pursue preparation as a POPULATION HEALTH SPECIALIST by focusing their course papers, projects
