UW School of Nursing Graduates 4TH Class
of Wound Care Specialists

On September 25, 2003 the largest class to date (11 nurses) graduated from the UW School of Nursing's nationally-accredited Wound Management Education Program (WMEP). Graduates came from CA (2), FL, ID, MS, OR (3), and WA (3) and will be returning to work in home health, long term care, hospice, acute care, and other specialty areas. Based on their enriching experience in the program, one student also left with a new goal of pursuing a doctorate in nursing and conducting wound research and two others are considering returning to the UW for a master's degree in nursing.

In operation for only two years, the WMEP is offered through Continuing Nursing Education and has already added 36 new wound care specialists to the nursing workforce and updated over 300 nurses about advances in wound management. Faculty involved in the program include Joie Whitney, PhD, RN, CWCN, Professor in Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems (BNHS), and Ruth Craven, Ed,D, RN, BC, FAAN, Professor in BNHS and Associate Dean for Educational Outreach and Community Relations, both of whom were instrumental in getting a HRSA training grant to develop the program; Connie Hirnle, MSN, RN, Lecturer in BNHS, who is the WMEP Project Manager; and two community wound care specialists, Renee Anderson, MSN, RN, CWOCN, President of Rainier Clinical Consultants, Inc., and Betty Hanrahan, MSN, ARNP, RNC, CWCN, Regional Wound Care Program Manager--West Region for Kindred Health Care Inc, who serve as the program's co-directors.
