On Wednesday, October 13, 1999 the University of Virginia School of Nursing and the School of Nursing Alumni Association will celebrate the 24th anniversary of the Zula Mae Baber Bice Memorial Lecture in conjunction with Medical Center Hour. The lecture will take place in McLeod Hall Auditorium at 12:30pm.
This year's lecture will be presented by Frances Marcus Lewis, RN, MN, PhD, FAAN, Elizabeth Sterling Soule Professor of Nursing and Health Promotion at the University of Washington. Lewis will discuss "Families and Cancer: Their Lived Realities, Needed Services, and Future Directions for Research."
Families have been given short shrift in cancer. Despite documented levels of psychosocial morbidity in women, children, and husbands experiencing cancer in a family member, there are few programs or services that directly assist the family who must deal with the everyday stress of cancer in the families' life. What do we know about the impact of cancer on a family? What are the risk and protective factors that predict adjustment in husbands and children? What is the evidence from clinical trial data that psychoeducational interventions make a difference in the adjustment and quality of life of family members? Dr. Lewis will draw answers to these questions from over 15 years of research. Recommendations for needed services and programs will be made along with needed directions for future research.
Lewis is a social scientist and an oncology clinical nurse specialist. In addition, she is a noted evaluation methodologist and an expert in health behavior theory (she received the Mayhew Derryberry Award from the American Public Health Association with Glanz and Rimer for substantial contributions to the advancement of health education and health promotion).
Lewis is a graduate of Loretto Heights College, University of Washington, and Stanford University. She was recently chosen as a Fellow of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. In 1998 she was the recipient of the Oncology Nursing Society/Bristol-Myers Squibb Oncology Distinguished Researcher Award. She has authored over 70 professional papers and has published extensively.
The Bice lecture series was inaugurated 24 years ago in memory of Zula Mae Baber Bices' many professional contributions to the School of Nursing and the University Hospital. Bice was dedicated to the profession of nursing and to the total education of nursing students.
The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
