Diana Lynn Woods, Nursing Researcher From University of Washington, to Attend Prestigious Research Seminar

New York, June 1, 2000 - Diana Lynn Woods, RN, PhD, of the University of Washington, College of Nursing has been selected to participate as one of 12 Scholars in the third annual Hartford Institute Geriatric Nursing Research Fellows and Scholars Program to be held at NYU's Division of Nursing from June 25-30, 2000.

"We are delighted to foster the research skills of Dr. Woods because she is conducting significant research in gerontologic nursing," said Terry Fulmer, RN, PhD, FAAN, co-director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and seminar chair.

Dr. Woods is an assistant professor at the University of Washington, School of Nursing. Her current research is involved with the role of stress and cortisol on sleep and aging and the effect of Therapeutic Touch on agitated behavior and cortisol in individuals with Alzheimer's Disease. Her goals are to increase knowledge about methodological issues when working with the elderly.

"I look forward to participating in what promises to be a stimulating and productive program," said Dr. Woods. "I'm eager to meet and discuss issues in geriatric nursing with other scholars and nurse researchers."

During the seminar, 15 outstanding gerontologic nurse investigators will have the opportunity to learn from prominent geriatric nursing research facility from the University of Washington, Oregon Health Sciences and the University of California, San Francisco. They will participate in a week-long, intensive, and interactive experience of critical analysis and research skill development in healthcare delivery and issues affecting the elderly.

The purpose of the Seminar is to promote excellence in nursing research that substantially improves care of the elderly. Each year the Fellows and Scholars are chosen from a different sector of the country - 2000 (Western states) 1999 (Midwest) and 1998 (Northeast).
