Psi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Will
Celebrate 40th Anniversary

At this annual induction ceremony, Psi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau will celebrate our 40th Anniversary, an important milestone in the history of PSI chapter. The original chapter was formed in 1962 at the University of Washington School of Nursing and was the 21st chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. As with other aspects of leadership that faculty from the University of Washington has provided for the nursing discipline, PSI chapter was the first chapter of Sigma Theta Tau in a school of nursing in the Western United States. The chapter's original charter was amended in 1991 when the chapter became PSI chapter-at-large representing the University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University, and Pacific Lutheran University. The University of Washington has continued to grow and we now have nursing programs on three campuses - Bothell, Seattle, and Tacoma.

Our induction speaker will be Linda B. Haas, PhC, RN, CDE, Endocrinology Clinical Nurse Specialist at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Ms. Haas is a graduate of Skidmore College with a BS in Nursing, a graduate of the UW SON with an MN, and currently a PhD candidate in epidemiology at the UW. She is a nationally recognized leader in the nursing and diabetes self-management.

A new tradition at this year's induction ceremony wull be the announcement of the recipients of our annual research grant awards. We also are announcing the first recipient of a research grant/project award from a newly created endowment fund. This year the board started a new endowment fund to support research and special projects conducted by nurses in clinical practice. We are beginning a fund raising campaign to enable us to grow this endowment so that we can either increase the amount of a single award or fund additional projects.

This research project award will be given to Dr. Patricia Guirgevich, the title of her project is "The Role of Parish Nurses in Addressing Sexual Abuse". Dr. Guirgevich has served Psi chapter well as a former secretary and editor of the newsletter.

Ms Anna Scott, MN "Initiation of Intravenous Heroin Use: Meaning of the First Time". Ms. Scott is a doctoral student at the University of Washington School of Nursing.

Dr. Mo-Kyung Sin, Exercise Intervention in Korean American Elderly with High Blood Pressure. Dr. Sin is a post-doctoral fellow on a training grant at the University of Washington, School of Nursing that is funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research.

Dr. Mayumi Anne Willgerdodt, "Development of the Asian American Family Conflict Assessment Tool for Chinese Families". Dr. Willgerdodt is Assistant Professor, University of Washington School of Nursing.
