Mitchell Honored for Neuroscience Nursing Contributions

Pamela Mitchell, PhD, CNRN, FAAN Dr. Pamela Mitchell, associate dean for research in the School of Nursing, is the newest recipient of an Honorary Membership award from the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN). Mitchell went to Chicago to accept this award, which she describes as "a tribute from my specialty colleagues." Honorary membership is conveyed upon individuals who have rendered "distinguished service and leadership to the Association or those who have made unique contributions to the field of neuroscience nursing," according to the AANN. It differs from other awards bestowed by this organization in that it honors the "legacy of excellence" by individuals who have made the neuroscience nursing specialty what it is today.

Mitchell has pioneered research on the relationship between brain injury, intracranial pressure and bedside nursing care over the past 30 years. She is the Elizabeth S. Soule Distinguished Professor of Health Promotion in the School of Nursing and Professor, Clinical Education, Patient Care Services, Harborview Medical Center. Mitchell received both her bachelor's degree in nursing and her doctorate at the University of Washington, the latter in healthcare systems ecology.
