As part of National Nurses Week, celebrated annually May 6-12 nationwide, the University of Washington School of Nursing will recognize the Seattle community's outstanding nurses and nursing leaders at its 2004 Nurses Recognition Banquet May 12. Christine Gregoire, attorney general of Washington, will serve as master of ceremony and featured speaker.
The event, which is designed to bring the greater Seattle health care community together to celebrate the impact of nursing throughout the region and around the world, will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Cirrus Room, Sheraton Seattle Hotel and Towers.
In conjunction with seven local hospitals and health care organizations, the program will recognize faculty, researchers, hospital and clinical nurses, and volunteers.
Since 1980, the UW School of Nursing has presented a Distinguished Alumni Award to an outstanding graduate. This year, the school added three new awards to recognize nurses in the greater nursing community.
The School of Nursing will present the following 2004 Leadership Awards:

- The Distinguished Research Award recognizes a nurse researcher whose professional achievements and accumulative contributions have brought personal distinction, enhanced the profession, improved the welfare of the general public, and brought honor and prestige to his or her field.
- The Humanitarian Award honors a nurse whose dedicated work and exemplary service has benefited society and the practice of nursing.
- The Outstanding Volunteer Award acknowledges a volunteer who embodies the ideals of the School of Nursing and whose leadership, dedication and contributions reflect an ongoing commitment to serve others through his or her vision and support of the UW School of Nursing.
