Awards and Scholarships
Linda Haas, RN, clinical faculty member in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems, was presented with the Secretary's Award for Excellence in Nursing in 1999. This national award is given to a Veteran's Administration nurse that has demonstrated excellence in a expanded role. Haas has worked for the VA-Puget Sound for 21 years in addition to being an active leader of the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the Washington Association of Diabetes Educators.
The U.S. Army Reserve center in Tumwater, Washington, has been named in honor of the late Col. Edith Nuttall, a 1963 graduate of the School. Nuttall served as an Army nurse during three wars and rose through the ranks of Army nursing to retire as assistant chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. This marks the first time that such a facility has
been named for a woman.
Barbara A. Spradley, '67 MN, received the Ruth B. Freeman Award from the Public Health Nursing section of the American Public Health Association at their annual meeting in Chicago. Spradley is an internationally-known nursing leader and educator.
Cynthia Dougherty has been named Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year by
the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Dougherty was recognized
for her work with patients with advanced heart disease and sudden cardiac
arrest.
Dr. Ruth Rea was the recipient of the Micromedix/Emergency Nurses Association
Foundation 1999 Best Emergency Nursing Research Award. Dr. Rea
co-investigated the "Relationship between Tympanic Membrane and Rectal Temperature
Measurements in Infants" with Kathleen Kleiver. They were presented the
award on September 19th in Washington, D.C.
The Ph.D. Coordinating Committee is happy to announce that the winner of
the Mildred M. Disbrow Award is Pamela Hardin, a 4th year doctoral
student. Her paper titled, "A Narrative Approach to Research
Methodology:Re-Conceptualizing the Environment as Language," received the
highest rating. This award is given to recognize Dr. Mildred M. Disbrow's
contributions to the development and testing of nursing theories and to
encourage the development of future nurse theorists. Financing of the
Award has been made possible by friends of Dr. Disbrow, faculty colleagues
and University of Washington Alumnae.
Pamela will present her paper at Scholarship Day, Thursday, June 10. The
award includes a certificate and a check for $200.
Please join us in congratulating Carol Blainey, the 1999 recipient of the
Rheba de Tornyay Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and
Phyllis Christianson, the 1999 recipient of the Excellence in Graduate
Teaching Award We will be honoring both Carol and Phyllis at the
Convocation of Friday, June 11.
At the recent King County Nurses Association Annual Meeting, Dorene Pancerz
received the Valerie Weiss Memorial Scholarship. Dorene is a PNP student
and recently returned from the National Association of Pediatric Nurse
Practitioner's Annual Meeting, all expenses paid by the organization. Only
two students in the nation received this funding.
Debby Phillips, a doctoral student, has also heard that she has received a
scholarship for 1999-2000 from the Nursing Education Fund. Outstanding
news, Debby! We are very proud of your achievements.
Please join us in congratulating Lynley Fow, who is a graduate student in
the Adult, Acute Care NP program. She was selected for a two-year
fellowship from the American Cancer Society. This program is extremely
competitive and the award was based on the quality of the student and
school. Congratulations, Lynley!
Please join us in congratulating Jamie Goldstein-Shirley, doctoral student,
who just received notice that she has been named the Isabel Robb Scholar
by the National Education Fund and has received a check for $10,000!!!!
Wow, Jamie, way to go... we are very proud of you.
Please join us in congratulating Pat Blissitt who recently received a
scholarship from the Association of Neuroscience Nurses. We are very
proud of you Pat!
The Office of Academic Programs recently received a letter notifying us
that Alix Livermont had been awarded the National Alaska Native American
Indian Nurses Association (NANAINA)-Honda of America Merit Award for 1999.

Program, for receiving a Mary Mahoney scholarship.
