Associate dean for academic programs Susan L. Woods, who is also a professor in biobehavioral nursing and health systems, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in November.

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) recently granted accreditation to the UW baccalaureate and master's programs in nursing for a term of 10 years, extending to December 31, 2010. Associate Dean Susan L. Woods led the accreditation process.

An invited editorial by Dean Nancy Fugate Woods on the current nursing shortage was featured on the front page of the opinion section of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in September. Entitled "Crisis in nursing has its roots in image problem", the essay was accompanied by short features and photos of seven outstanding graduates of the School of Nursing who represent some of the many career options available to nurses today.

Professor Emeritus Mildred Disbrow, Ph.D., F.A.A.N., died October 3 after a period of declining health. Dr. Disbrow helped develop the UW's doctorate in nursing science program and an award for a doctoral paper contributing to nursing theory is given in her honor.

Jeanne Quint Benoliel, credited with transforming care for dying patients, will be honored as a "Living Legend" of the American Academy of Nursing at the Academy's annual meeting in November. This highly prestigious honor recognizes fellows of the Academy who have defined the profession of nursing in some fundamental way and who have made life-long contributions of great distinction.Benoliel came to the School in 1970 after earning national recognition for her research on bereavement. She served as a professor and department chair before being named the School's first Elizabeth Sterling Soule Professor of Nursing and Health Promotion in 1987. Benoliel founded a graduate program in "Oncology Transition Services" that became the foundation for advanced practice nursing care in hospice and home care for the dying in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere.

Associate Professor Emeritus Mary Boozer,'55 MN, died August 9. Dr. Boozer joined the School of Nursing faculty in 1956 and retired in 1987.

Margaret Heitkemper, '75 MN, Ph.D., was awarded the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award by the Nursing Alumni Association at the annual Friends of Nursing Dinner in October. Heitkemper has earned an international reputation as a nurse researcher, particularly in the field of gastrointestinal function as it relates to hormones, stress and diet in women. She is the recipient of many research awards and has been on faculty since 1981. Heitkemper is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is director of the Center for Women's Health Research as well as chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems.
