Corbally Professor Linking the Public to Nursing Research
Corbally Professor Margaret Heitkemper, who is also director of the Center for Women's Health Research in the School of Nursing, believes that information about women's health needs to move from the professional journal to the lay press, where women who are dealing with potentially debilitating health problems in their daily lives can have better access to treatment options and other useful data.
In keeping with this goal, Heitkemper has been named to serve on the board of two popular women's magazines, Ladies Home Journal and Women's Day. Heitkemper has not actively sought the appointments, but says she is "thrilled" with the opportunity. The subject of her serving on Women's Day came up during her interview for the Robert Wood Johnson fellowship position, which she received last July.
An internationally recognized expert on gastrointestinal symptoms in women, Heitkemper hopes the opportunity to provide health information to women through the popular press will also help put nursing into the media spotlight. "Historically, stepping into the limelight is not part of our training," she notes. "But nursing students today need to become comfortable with this role."
Heitkemper also serves as chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems in the School of Nursing.
