This introductory monograph by nurse researcher and UW School of Nursing Dean Nancy Fugate Woods summarizes why women's health was chosen as the only topic for the 2001 edition of the Annual Review of Nursing Research, a careful compilation co-edited by Woods and fellow women's health scientist Diana Taylor that was just named "Book of the Year" by the American Journal of Nursing. Woods and Taylor draw upon their own vast knowledge as internationally-renowned women's health researchers to select the work of 11 nurse scientists whose work typifies the ways that women's health has moved away from a "disease model" to a specialty focusing on wellness and illness within the framework of life experiences. Introduced by a historic overview of women's health scholarship, this nineteenth volume of the ARNR series examines contemporary women's health in terms of women's social roles, diversity issues, and the influence of factors such as stress, fatigue, domestic violence, health decision-making and menstrual difficulties. Woods is founder and former director of the Center for Women's Health Research in the School of Nursing. Taylor, associate professor of nursing at University of California, San Francisco, was formerly co-director of the UCSF Center for Collaborative Primary Care and former director of the UCSF Women's Primary Care Program.
