Ekene "Kennie" Amaefule receives Martin Luther King Volunteer Recognition Award


Date: January 13, 2000

Ekene "Kennie" Amaefule, a graduate, non-matriculated student in the School who is applying to the Master of Nursing program, received a Martin Luther King Volunteer Recognition Award at a multi-cultural tribute to the renowned civil rights leader at University of Washington Medical Center. Amaefule came to the United States 18 years ago from Nigeria and works as a trauma orthopedic nurse at Harborview Medical Center. In addition to numerous volunteer activities in her neighborhood school, church and workplace with the homeless, drug addicts, alcoholics and others in need, she also funds the education of poor children in her village in Nigeria and is raising funds for a well there to decrease water-borne diseases.
