Marjorie Batey - Founder of the Office of Nursing Research in 1970,
Professor Emeritus Marjorie V. Batey helped to develop a vigorous research
subculture in the School to make research part of the educational process
and to provide nurse scientist role models for students. Under her
direction, total research funds increased 97% in just seven years. Today,
the School receives more money for research than any other nursing school
in the country.

Betty Giblin - Professor Emeritus Elizabeth "Betty" Giblin pioneered
the laboratory study of sleep in schools of nursing and established the
first nursing school sleep lab in the country in 1979 in the School of
Nursing. Her early research on sleep apnea and sleep patterns in
Alzheimer's disease and chronic obstructive lung disease set the stage for
a growing national interest in the role of sleep in many different
illnesses.

Rheba de Tornyay - The establishment of a UW doctoral degree in nursing science came to fruition during the tenure of Dean Emeritus Rheba de
Tornyay, as did the creation of a satellite nursing education program, the establishment of a separate department of Continuing Nursing Education, and the launching of the annual Friends of Nursing Dinner, the
Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Elizabeth Sterling Soule annual lecture series.

Sue Hegyvary - As immediate past dean, Sue T. Hegyvary oversaw the establishment of three endowed professorships and three research centers, as well as a program to provide model nursing care in retirement communities. Nursing degrees were introduced at UW Tacoma and UW Bothell, and the Hegyvary Citizens of the World program was established to provide international experiences for nursing students.
