March of Dimes honors SoN faculty member, student and alumna

March of Dimes winners

A school of nursing faculty member and PhD student were honored at the 2009 March of Dimes’ Nurse of the Year awards for their work as nurses and contributions to the nursing community.

Doris Boutain, associate professor in the department of psychosocial and community health, received the 2009 March of Dimes’ Nurse of the Year award for her research and advocacy of preterm birth at the 7th annual Nurse of the year breakfast on December 3rd at the Bellevue Hilton.  She was honored for her contributions in research that have advanced research and the nursing profession.

Fuqin Liu, PhD student, received the 2009 March of Dimes’ Nurse of the Year in the “new generation” category for a nursing student who has demonstrated outstanding professionalism and mastered the coursework necessary for a successful nursing career.

Each year, the March of Dimes honors local nurses for their care and compassion for patients through the Western Washington Nurse of the Year Awards. Several alumni from the school of nursing were included in the 102 nominees for 14 Nurse of the Year Awards.  The Legend of Nursing Award was given to SoN Alumna Thelma Jacobs Pegues, ’55 BS, ’66 MN, for a retired nurse whose lifetime career has been dedicated to advancing the field of Nursing for all generations to come.
