Dean's Monthly Communication: January 2007

Message from Dean Woods
At the beginning of each new year, I challenge myself by writing some personal and professional resolutions. On the personal side, some of mine include taking more pictures, playing my flute more often and, of course, exercising! The professional goals always include something about finishing incomplete manuscripts for publication, finding funding for student support, developing curricular projects and enhancing our facilities. At the top of my list each year is to appreciate and thank each of you for the many contributions you make to the UW SoN! Here's to a great 2007 for all of us.
—Nancy Fugate Woods, PhD, RN, FAAN

Honors and Awards
Susan Blackburn, prof., Dept. of FCN, and Mary Salazar, prof., Dept of PCH, were honored in November at the March of Dimes 2006 Nurse of the Year Awards. Blackburn was named the 2006 Distinguished Nurse of the Year, which honors "a nurse whose contributions and accomplishments have had an extraordinary influence within the nursing profession in Western Washington." Salazar received the 2006 Research/Advancing the Profession Award, which recognizes "a nurse who has made contributions that have advanced research or the nursing profession." Congratulations to both!

Pamela Potter, postdoctoral fellow, Dept. of BNHS, is moderating a CAM research panel at the 9th National Oncology Nursing Society Conference on Research, sponsored by Oncology Nursing Society, Feb. 8–10, 2007, in Hollywood, Calif.

Staff
Please welcome the newest additions to our SoN Staff:

Adrienne Biondich , Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project manager, Dept. of FCN, joined the school in December. Adrienne's impressive background includes family therapy certification, curriculum and policies development, project management and conference planning. She comes to us from the Dept. of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics.

Carol Burleson, PNP program coordinator, Dept. of FCN, started in the department on Jan. 8. Carol joins the SoN from Harborview Medical Center, Dept. of General Internal Medicine. Her duties there included supporting the section chief, fiscal management of a multi-site grant and producing the section's newsletter. She also has experience working with Web sites.

Eileen Chin is a new fiscal specialist in the Dept. of BNHS. She will spend 50 percent of her time at Northgate, working on the IBS grant, and 50 percent working on the gut function grant. Eileen comes to SoN from Harborview where she worked in the financial office.

Pam Hillman joined the Dept. of BNHS in December as an administrative coordinator working with Margaret Heitkemper, prof., Dept. of BNHS, and the Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Chair in Nursing, and Victoria Harrell, assistant to the BNHS chair. Prior to joining BNHS, Pam worked for more than eight years at the UW School of Medicine for Richard Deyo, prof., Dept. of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine at Harborview.

Carrie Versolenko, a new fiscal specialist in the Dept of FCN, will serve as a backup for payroll duties, order supplies, manage miscellaneous post-award grant budgets and closeouts, oversee equipment needs and generally back up Pat Floyd, fiscal specialist, in fiscal matters. Carrie previously worked in the Dept. of Neurology.

Faculty
In December, Noel Chrisman, prof., Dept. of PCH, completed a project for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Alongside two other anthropologists, Chrisman observed surveyor teams working in hospitals in various parts of the country to determine whether they were using the best data-gathering methods and observing and documenting issues correctly. Among their findings were that the surveyors are sophisticated about systems issues in hospitals but are much less attentive to cultural issues.

International Scholars
Traveling Scholars
This month, we said bon voyage to Catherine Carr , assoc. prof., Dept. of FCN, and the following BSN students, who will be joining Cathy Lindenberg, assoc. prof., Dept. of FCN, for the winter quarter study abroad program in Costa Rica:

  • Angela Gilmore
  • Marissa Griffith
  • Amanda Heffernan
  • Ellen Kilcourse

  • Charlene Troung
Noel Chrisman, prof., Dept. of PCH, spent eight days in Tokyo in late October where he consulted on a project to promote individual, family and community health as part of the St. Luke's College of Nursing's Center of Excellence for People-centered Nursing. The center has 11 projects, including one that teaches 5-year-olds about their bodies and one for older adults that promotes exercise and regular health screenings. Three professors from St. Luke's will visit the UW in February to learn more about how qualitative research fits into our doctoral program.

Technology Innovations in Education and Research (TIER)
Judith Kelson moved from BNHS in January to serve as Director of TIER Operations. Judith is responsible for TIER administrative and fiscal operations. She will also work with Alan Gojdics, Director of Educational Technology, to continue the enhancement of distance learning opportunities for remote students. Judith brings years of SoN experience, including distance learning and training grant management for BNHS, as well as her exemplary organizational and systems management skills, to her new position.

As SoN's needs for Web site assistance become increasingly more sophisticated, TIER staff are making sure they have the most up-to-date skills to meet those needs. Simone Nelson, fiscal specialist, and Melinda McRae, Web information specialist, are pursuing continuing education in Web development. They are currently enrolled as Graduate Non-matriculated (GNM) students in technical communication and have applied for admission to the graduate program.
