Inside the School of Nursing:
May 2009 e-news
MESSAGE FROM DEAN SALMON
***********************************************************
Can it possibly be May already?

It is really difficult to fathom how quickly 2009 is passing – and how much important work has already taken place this year. This issue of our newsletter is testament to this work and the depth of commitment, creativity and energy that faculty and staff demonstrate every single day. There isn’t an academic topic that hasn’t been addressed in some fashion: incredible grant proposal writing and support; curricular challenges; budget cut survival activities…and, all of the regular things that we do every single day.
And then, there was the truly magical evening of our Nurses Recognition Banquet on May 7th. A moment of celebration, community and a pause that allowed each of us to simply enjoy the essence of what we are working so hard to preserve and promote: excellence in nursing.
My message for this month, given all of this, is really quite simple: 1) THANK YOU!!! For all that you have done, do now and will continue to do…you make a difference every single day. And, 2) take time to celebrate and enjoy the good things that we too often overlook and miss.
Happy May!
--Marla Salmon

Nurses Complete Med-Surg Review Course in April
A record 250 Pacific Northwest nurses completed the annual three-month intensive med-surg review course, co-sponsored by UWCNE and UWMC in partnership with health care agencies throughout the region. Nurses at 15 agencies met for three hours for 14 weeks to hear lectures transmitted from T661 via the Internet. A nurse educator in Alaska wrote: “Please let everyone involved know what a wonderful opportunity they are offering nurses, especially those of us in remote locations. The staff learned a lot in an enjoyable format.” Upcoming online format: The course will be repeated in a 10-week online format this summer and fall for nurse educators and RNs who want a comprehensive, practice-based med-surg update to enhance their professional development and teaching.
