Inside the School of Nursing:
March 2009 e-news
MESSAGE FROM DEAN SALMON
***********************************************************
I recently overheard someone say they’ve stopped reading the newspaper -- “too much bad news!” No question, it is hard to sift through the many stories and come out smiling. Fortunately for all of us here in the school, this is a newsletter filled with good news. It is worth reading, both because it offers concrete evidence that good things continue to happen here and because there is something more fundamental that is reflected in each story. Quite simply, it is about caring.
It occurred to me that the reason I like our newsletter is it reminds us why we are all here. In every way, the stories and news items relate to something fundamentally good and positive. It is a testament to the true value of caring – whether for one another, for the task at hand or for the profession of nursing and its contributions to caring for others. This school is about caring. For me, caring has become something of a touchstone during this time. Caring is why we are here, and it is what will help us move forward together during this very difficult time.
As you read this newsletter, I invite you to think about caring and the many ways in which it is a part of all of our lives. Also, please think about how we can each embed caring in our daily lives here, in small and sometimes overlooked ways. In a time when so much communication is toxic, indifferent and inhumane, let us think about ways in which our common ground – caring – can be expressed over and over again.
Many thanks to each of you for your caring….every day!
--Marla Salmon
