Inside the School of Nursing
January 2009 e-news
MESSAGE FROM DEAN SALMON
***********************************************************
Is it really possible that it is January already? Happy New Year to each of you and to those you love!
Although it’s a new year, we remain inextricably connected to all that has come before. Fortunately for all of us and for those we serve, the work of our faculty, staff and students over the past year has set the stage for a very productive and positive new year. I think you’ll enjoy reading examples of our work in this month’s newsletter.
While I believe we are very well positioned for this new year, I am also aware that this is a year in which we will be facing enormous challenges, with a great deal of uncertainty and very large budget problems. As each month unfolds, we will share how we are addressing these challenges and continue to convey our good news. And I do believe there will be good news, and that we will emerge from these challenging times a stronger and better school and community.
In the meantime, please enjoy this issue of the newsletter and celebrate the many, many good things in our school and in life! Thank you for being a part of our community, and all the best for this new year!
--Marla Salmon

ADVANCEMENT UPDATE
***********************************************************************
Longtime School of Nursing supporters Ellery and Kirby Cramer have established a $50,000 endowed scholarship to support undergraduate nursing students who are Washington residents in financial need. The gift was made to mark the Cramers’ 50th wedding anniversary and in the name of Ellery’s father, Lyall S. Crary, who was both a doctor and a dentist in rural Montana. Ellery remembers that her father always said, “The nurses are the most important.”
Four faculty members and a UW staff member have established new fellowships or scholarships benefitting nursing students as part of the UW’s Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign for Students. Each new $5,000 fellowship or scholarship qualifies for a $5,000 match by the UW:
CATHRYN BOOTH-LaFORCE, exec. assoc. dean and the Charles and Gerda Spence Endowed Professor in Nursing, established the Victoria S. Levin Memorial Endowed Fellowship Fund to support graduate work in infant mental health and development.
ELIZABETH BRIDGES, asst. prof., BNHS, established a new scholarship in honor of Sue Woods, assoc. dean for academic services, to support students studying critical care.
BARBARA COCHRANE, the de Tornyay Term Professor for Healthy Aging, created the de Tornyay Center Travel Scholarship to support undergraduate, graduate and professional nursing students who participate in aging-related presentations at regional or national professional conferences.
CAROL LANDIS, prof., BNHS, established a new fellowship in the name of her parents, Ivan and Erma M. Landis. This fellowship will support students studying biobehavioral health in the PhD program in nursing science.
KATHERINE MACDONALD, ’89 BSN, ’06 MN, is an RN in cardiac-thoracic surgery at the UW Medical Center. She established an endowed scholarship to support undergraduate students pursuing medical-surgical nursing.
