Inside the School of Nursing:

February 2009 e-News

MESSAGE FROM DEAN SALMON

***********************************************************

It is February -- a new month, a new year, a new president and administration for this country, and a rapidly changing financial outlook. The daylight hours are longer, people are pulling together across this country to grapple with adversity, and spring is on its way. All of this together spells uncertainty, community, hope and regeneration. These seem to be the themes for our school as well. During this time of serious challenge and uncertainty, our faculty and staff are deeply engaged in planning for the future in realistic and hopeful ways.

This issue of our newsletter provides an overview of the very important work underway in the school. Much of what you will read reflects the continuing excellence of our faculty and staff as we continue our research, education and service activities.

I would also like to share a quick summary of the work underway by key task forces within the school. These groups are exploring creative options for us to save and steward our scarce resources, generate income and improve our daily work in ways that better support our faculty and staff. Much of that work has been guided by ongoing suggestions from faculty and staff -- lots of very wise, creative and thoughtful input.

Among the ideas being discussed so far:

     • Changing portions of the DNP curriculum to a fee-based, self-sustaining model.

     • A variety of options and ideas to increase revenue through formation of an Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Marketing work group.

     • Centralizing grants administration and other administrative functions.

As we move forward, our decisions and actions will be framed by the school’s strategic priorities and the specific values the school's leadership adopted in the fall. Documents outlining the values and strategic priorities can be found on the school’s shared drive: O:/All SoN/ 2009 Budget. You will also find a lengthier update from the working groups in this folder.

These priorities have been identified as the areas of greatest strength and potential for the school's future contributions and societal relevance, areas that will be protected and nurtured.

There is no question that this is a time of great challenge, intensity and uncertainty.  However, it is also a time in which we have the opportunity to become an even more creative and productive community and a school whose future is distinguished not only by its excellence, but also its relevance to this state, nation and world.

--Marla Salmon

GIFT NEWS

New numbers from University Advancement show the School of Nursing ranked fifth among the University’s 29 schools, colleges and programs in the number of funds created under the Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign for Students, which ended Dec. 31.

School of Nursing-affiliated donors established 30 scholarship and fellowship funds to support students during the nearly four-year campaign, which matched donations of UW employees and retirees up to $10,000. Campuswide, 898 UW employees and retirees participated, raising more than $13.1 million for student support.

NEW FELLOWSHIPS

The School of Nursing has been awarded two Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation Fellowships for 2009-10. The three-year ARCS fellowships are awarded to PhD candidates interested in nursing science and research related to human health ecology and will be used to help recruit top scholars to the school. The Seattle chapter of ARCS began including nursing scientists in its awards about two years ago at the request of a group of nursing faculty and friends.

SOULE LECTURE

Join the School of Nursing and UWAA for the 29th annual Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture: "A Cause for Concern: The Global Health Workforce and the State of Our Health." Dr. Barbara Stilwell, director of technical leadership for IntraHealth International, explores the question of why migration matters in health care and examines who wins and who loses. The lecture will be held Feb. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Kane Hall, Room 120.
