Dean's Monthly Communication: May 2008

MESSAGE FROM DEAN WOODS
***********************************************************
In April, the School of Nursing enjoyed several opportunities to share our outstanding
work with our colleagues and the public.

We received significant attention in the public media for our ventures into using clinical
simulation to teach our students. We enjoyed print and TV media coverage of scenes from
our new simulation lab facilities, with a reception and tour for donors who have made our
purchase of the new equipment and training of faculty possible. To date, several of our
faculty have had the opportunity to attend simulation training efforts, most recently at the
WSU simulation lab. Our next steps will involve a broader array of faculty as we begin the
serious work of integrating clinical simulation as a pedagogical approach for clinical teaching. Linking the new equipment and teaching techniques to each curriculum and course will now be possible!

And many of you participated in the Western Institute of Nursing meeting in California last
month. In addition to participating in the skit (the ability to laugh with and at ourselves is a
Western  trademark), many received significant honors.

PAMELA MITCHELL, prof. and assoc. dean for research, BNHS, gave the keynote
address, focusing on the link between research, education and practice.

MARTHA J. LENTZ, research prof., BNHS, was inducted as the new president of WIN.
Lentz is co-director, Research Development and Partnership Core, Center for Women's
Health and Gender Research.

Many individual faculty and student researchers made presentations, including a symposium on practice-based research. ELIZABETH BRIDGES, asst. prof., BNHS;
JOIE WHITNEY, the Harborview Medical Center Endowed Professor in Critical Care
Nursing; and DONNA BERRY, the Myrene C. McAninch Term Professor in Nursing,
highlighted their respective partnerships with local medical institutions. Joining them as part of the symposium were clinical colleagues NANCY UNGER, TINA SPENCER and SARA LITECKY from Harborview Medical Center, Leslie Hampton from UWMC and SETH EISENBERG from the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

This symposium reflected our efforts over several years to build the kind of clinical partnerships that bring the clinicians at the bedside into collaboration with the clinical researchers from the SON.

Several of our students, faculty, and alumni took top honors, including: PhD student CECILIA ROSCIGNO received the Carol Lindeman award for new
researchers with her research focusing on how children with traumatic brain injury describe
their life after injury. Doctoral student KUMIN SEO won the best poster category for
"Coping Effort Scale for Parents of Mentally Ill Youth." Doctoral student
MARILYN HAMMER won runner-up in the best poster category with "Glycemic Status
in Hematopinetic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients." JOSEPH TARIMAN, a predoctoral
student, won runner-up in the best student poster category with "Decision Making in
Oncology Settings: A Concept Analysis."

Many other faculty members and students presented papers or participated in breakout
sessions.

Throughout the conference, I was thrilled by the number of award winners and presenters
with ties to the UW SoN as alums, students or faculty members.  It was stunning to see the impact of our school!

These two events were just a sample of the notice that the School of Nursing receives locally and nationally.  Thank you for making this such a remarkable place!

-- Nancy Woods

CHRIS MILLER joined the SoN on May 1 as the new assistant director of development.
You may recall Chris from her days in the Department of PCH as program coordinator for the Stress Response Clinic. Chris then moved into UW Development as the assistant
director for athletic funding for mens and womens basketball. She most recently served as director of major gifts for the Woodland Park Zoo, where she realized that she missed campus life and her campus colleagues.

CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION

The popular 2008 med-surg CNE course will be offered twice in a new 10-week online
format -- June 9 to Aug. 15 and Sept. 15 to Nov. 21. Designed for experienced nurses,
the course provides a comprehensive review of medical-surgical nursing in a flexible
learning environment tailored to busy nurses and nurse educators.

SoN has received the maximum accreditation award of six years as a provider of continuing nursing education from ANCC's Commission on Accreditation with no stipulations.

A record 205 nurses at 12 sites in four states completed a three-month intensive med-surg review course for practice and certification. Sponsored by SoN and UWMC, the course
was presented live at SoN and transmitted via the Internet to groups of nurses at participating hospitals in Anchorage, Astoria, Ore., Bellingham, Boise, Longview, Port
Townsend, Seattle, Spokane, Sunnyside and Tacoma. Technology advances will enable
another five to 10 hospitals to participate as co-sponsors next year.

On June 6 and 7, CNE is moving from its Northgate offices to space on the 11th floor
of UW Towers.
